Recently Mally arrived at my local Ulta and having heard a number of beauty bloggers and vloggers talk about the brand I decided to pick up the Mally Beauty Discovery Kit (In the Pink) when I saw it on Beauty.com (also - I LOVE Beauty.com).
When I opened the palette I did what I always do when I get new pretty makeup in the mail: I start swatching. The problem with this palette is that swatching SUCKED. It was nearly impossible for me to get any color out of the highlighter or bronzer and the blush was absolutely impossible. I ended up scraping the blush pan trying to get SOMETHING out. For a bit I was able to convince myself that the poor swatches were due to the fact that it was dark out and my lighting wasn't great. But I then tried swatching throughout the day and still - the color payoff sucked and the texture was clumpy and uneven (when I could tease color out of the pan anyway).
Here are swatches photographed in natural light:
From top to bottom: the lip gloss, the grey eyeshadow, the illuminator, the bronzer and the blush. The blush is right above my freckle (at the bottom left of my arm). You're just going to have to trust me that I did actually get some swatches of these products because aside from the lip gloss (which isn't anything spectacular) and the grey eyeshadow (meh), even I'm having a hard time seeing where the swatches are on my arm. Also? I am NOT tan, not by any stretch.
If the quality of the products wasn't enough to turn me off to this set, then the state of a couple of the products certainly was. The issues I had here were not related to shipping, either.
The eyeshadow pan popped out of the packaging when I opened it which wouldn't be an issue to me if I wanted to put it in a Z Palette rather than keep the individual shadow as is. The brush however, fell apart as soon as I went to wash it yesterday. I'm *mostly* okay with that when the brush is a $3.00 ELF brush (they're hit and miss but I still love them) but I'm not okay with that happening when the brand is supposed to be more high end (and the price point for many of the Mally products would suggest that they consider themselves a high end brand).
I'm sure you have figured out my thoughts on this - the entire set was disappointing if not downright unusuable. I may give this to Kim's daughter who's getting into makeup because I know for a fact that she could NOT over-apply these products.
There may be other great Mally makeup products out there, but as a "discovery kit" this fell far short of wowing me. I'd recommend passing on this and picking up one of the Tarte palettes instead. This one comes to mind. For the price, you'll get a better illuminator, bronzer and blush and the eyeshadows are amazing. All you *don't* get is two crappy brushes and an underwhelming lip gloss!
